Two books down! (The Great Gatsby)

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be "apathetic."

The main Character seem to be completely indifferent almost everything for the great majority of the book. It seems like he only really feels anything at the very end.

Therefore, I was completely indifferent for the entire book. I was constantly waiting for a direction that the story was going, but never really found one. It definitely did not provoke any insightful thinking for me.

Hopefully I like Life of Pi more...

  1. Really? I loved Gatsby. His apathy forced to me to see things from a different point of view. I usually force my own way of seeing things on the lead characters in a book. Is this like book club with Steven? I love it! I can't wait to hear what you think of Life of Pi. I've been considering reading it. :)

  3. I liked Gatsby, but I definitely see your point. The movie of it is really good and pretty close to the book. It does, however, bring out some of the symbolism in the book that makes it at least a little more thought provoking. I have the movie, we should get together and watch sometime (if you're interested). : )

I've never even heard of the Life of Pi, so if you like it, I may just Google it!

  4. I would like to see the movie. I already watched the Tale of Two Cities movie last week, so the trend should continue.

  5. I completely agree. Apathy seems to be a theme amongst writers a' la twenties (aka Hemingway as well), which speaks as much about the era as it does the authors. All people seemed to care about were the parties and the [illegal] booze.

Hence, a desire to be in a floaty, dreamy state is pretty much required if you're to pick one up and enjoy it. At least imo.

P.S. JoeJoe says he hated the book lol
